A destination in modern-day Massachusetts for any child within field-trip distance, Plymouth Rock is said to mark the spot where the Mayflower landed in 1620, carrying the pilgrims who would celebrate their first harvest with the indigenous Wampanoag. I grew up hearing tales of my own ancestors who were among those early arrivals. This summer, on a quest to know more about my origins, I traveled to the original Plymouth, an English port city from which the Mayflower, and so many ships like it, first embarked.

For many Native Americans, however, Thanksgiving is a day of dark reflection about the genocide that followed.

Juneteenth became an official federal holiday two years ago, but it was an unofficial holiday for many Black people before then. We should say, "We are a nation of Indigenous peoples, enslaved peoples, and immigrants." Since President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law two years ago, Juneteenth is now a federally recognized holiday. Some schools, such as Georgetown, have gone further than acknowledgement by renaming buildings that glorify slave owners and offering full scholarships to descendants of enslaved peoples. The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act is but another step towards inclusion of all peoples who made America: "We are a nation of Native peoples, enslaved peoples, and immigrants."

However, for Indigenous Peoples, it's a day to gather to reflect on their heritage and past treatment of ancestors. Recognized as The National Day of Mourning, the event has been held every November since 1970. Instead, James delivered a speech on Cole's Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts next to Ousamequin's statue, where he described Indigenous peoples' perspectives on the holiday. This year, the event began with a prayer service at 12:00pm, followed by speeches from members of the Indigenous community and a march, according to a report by Maine Public Radio. "It is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide."
